Science Based Target Commitment
Hero has a strong commitment to reduce emissions across the full value chain, which we formalized by joining the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).
Validated emission reduction targets
Our near and long-term targets were validated by SBTi in 2023, confirming they are in line with the SBTi’s 1.5°C mitigation pathways to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Our science-based targets prove our commitment to actively reduce GHG emissions along the full value chain, not by doing what is easy, but by doing what is necessary to significantly reduce our global environmental impact.
Our targets
Near-term targets
The Hero Group is committed to reducing absolute Scopes 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46.2% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. We also commit to reducing our absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 28% within the same timeframe. The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
Long-term targets
Alongside our near-term targets, we have also committed to reducing absolute Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2050 from a 2019 base year. The Hero Group also commits to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% within the same timeframe. The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
Overall net-zero target
The Hero Group commits to reaching net-zero GHG emissions across our value chain by 2050 from a 2019 base year.
Reporting on progress
Our Hero Group approved emission reduction targets are publicly available through the SBTi’s target dashboard. The SBTi’s target dashboard shows companies and financial institutions that have set science-based targets or have committed to developing targets.
We furthermore report the progress against our approved SBTi targets on an annual basis through our Annual Report.
